Can Finals Day match the excitement?
22 Nov
Unbelievably exciting night of action in the Dungeon where Itchy’s were trying to pull back an 11-5 deficit from the first leg against Fez Sharks while Sherpas were looking to hold onto a 9-7 lead established against Dungeon Kings at Everest last week.
The battle was soon in full swing on table 1 with a series of remarkable wins by Itchy’s to the background of an increasingly noisy audience and the impossible soon started to look like, well, maybe not so impossible before, with the match at 16-15 in the very last frame, Riva held it together to take it, the match and a place in the semi-finals for Sharks – to audible sighs of relief from their team and supporters.
Everest Sherpas started well in their match on Dungeon Table 2 by drawing first blood against Kings before the match see-sawed and, with the aid of a couple of scratches on the black from remarkably difficult angles by Sherpas, Kings were 16-14 going into the last game. Considerable indecision by Sherpas as to who was going to play if for them but when put in, Craig Cooper played a fine game to bring it back to parity and a play-off when a very poor attempted snooker gave the first game to that hugely talented Kings player Adi, while Kings Naya, the best player of either sex on display over the two legs, saw them home 2-0 and their place in the semis secured.
Excitement on the night was hardly restricted to the Dungeon as, upstairs in Fez, Everest Lightning were trying to pull back a 9-7 deficit from the first leg against Fezticles and were to start well by going 4-0 before, weakened a little by a couple of players dropping out, they were pulled back to 8-8 on the night and a loss by 17-15 overall.
Quite remarkably, and over at Aphrodite, Aphro Love and Aphro Blue were also to go down to the wire with Love’s Danny McGee going 2-0 in the last match-up to bring them to 16-16 and another tie break! Alex McMillan lost the first frame for Aprhro Love in the three frame play off, however, Krystabel Djajalie steadied the Love Boat with a win before sister Klaudia finally took the last frame in a scrappy affair, with both players having several shots on the 8-ball.
So four quarter finals and every one of them going the full 32 frames – and two of them to tie breaks. The only question now is can Finals Day match the excitement of that unprecedented state of affairs?
The finals are in the Dungeon on 1st December of course, when the semi final line ups will be Aphro Love v Fez Sharks and Fezticles v Dungeon Kings. Not to be missed.
Finally, the many Tanggans who have played in FAB this season are welcome to join in the awards night fun at Everest tomorrow night, Friday 23rd, starting at 20:00.
No mean talent herself
20 Nov
Talented newcomer to the Tangga, Khalid Raheil, continues to find that there are not too many free lunches in the Ladder Top 30 and finds himself pinned back twice by the same score early evening at Fez, 3-1, by a Krystabel Djajalie who continues to improve and demonstrate that she is indeed no mean talent herself.
The Sponsor roll is quite breathtaking
19 Nov
Final details of the Manila competition being used to discover amateur talent in the Philippines have now been announced and can be found here.
As you see above, the Sponsor roll is quite breathtaking and the prize structure (though admittedly for a one-off event) knocks our own efforts into a cocked hat. We are going to have to raise our own game to compete. Should you know of any likely candidates for becoming a Ladder sponsor for 2013 then let us know, a range of sponsorship packages are available.
Identification, arrest, trial, conviction and execution
18 NovFollowing the unsightly blemishing of the top of the Tangga Malam board in the Dungeon by the unfortunate application of inappropriate cleaning fluid, we have received news and a photo of an act of despicable graffiti to the board.
Information leading to the identification, arrest, trial, conviction and execution of the culprit attracts a small monthly prize and a personal suspension of all ladder reach provisions for three months .
